Don’t you think it’s time to update your resume?

How long ago did you? 6 months? Three years ago?

How about when you started this job?

It is crucial to read through your resume at least once a year. You might be surprised to find that a lot of what was written a while ago is not applicable anymore.

In your attempt to update your resume, ensure to start with the basics — your header.

Is all the information in here correct?

If it does not hold accurate information, maybe you need to freshen up this section so that it reflects what is true at the moment.

Your career history

This is not just whether you have had a promotion or not. Your role within the company may have changed.

If this is the case, you may need to update your job role on your resume to reflect what you are currently doing. The resume is there to put your best foot forward.

If your career is long enough, you should probably remove positions you haven’t had in over 20 years as they are irrelevant to what you are doing now.

Resume writers generally recommend you work with at least ten years of experience in your work history. As these are highly relevant to the job you are applying for.

Try to remember that you shouldn’t list everything on your resume. You generally have to make a job application where you can go into more detail there.

Any new qualifications?

If you have recently gained a new qualification or taken more training to progress in your career, you may need to add this to update your resume.

These new qualifications need to be front and center on your resume so that you can show off your skills.

Never state your references on your resume as you can state that references will be given on request.

Once you have changed and updated everything you need to do.

It is best to get a hiring professional or friend to look over your resume, who can read through and point anything which might benefit from being changed

Implement what you agree with and then save this new resume.

It is always advisable to update your resume in any case you ever come across an attractive vacant position that requires urgent application.
